You have probably heard me preach this from the pulpit: “In Christ, there are no end times, no endings, only new beginnings, new life.” That saying is the fruit of my personal reflection and study of Sacred Scripture. Basically, I have rephrased what I find to be a fundamental understanding of the meaning of our lives illuminated by the light of Christ and the experience of his mercy. The celebration of Christ’s resurrection and the Gospel readings which form part of our Easter liturgies all serve to undergird the hope my reflection seeks to express, especially from the account of the Resurrection written by St. Luke proclaimed in the Easter Vigil liturgy, which includes the following:   

<"Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember what he said to you while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day">>(Luke 24: 1-7; emphasis mine).*

With child-like inquisitiveness and sincerity, but without any shade of guile, the “two men” ask a question, "Why do you seek the living one among the dead?” Our answer will have much to do with our longings, and where we might expect to find signs and hopes for life.   

I am convinced that Christ Jesus asks the same question of us but hopes that instead of trying to reply with words, we respond by becoming strong enough to seek the Lord’s mercy, humble and grateful enough to receive it, and joyful enough to be merciful.

Easter is the time to rejoice in His resurrection and our redemption and recognize that his eternal promises beckon us beyond any thought of endings and that his mercy not only offers us the possibility of second chances, but the real experience of new life, “through him, with him and in him,” for ourselves and those around us.

Probablemente me han escuchado predicar esto desde el púlpito: «En Cristo, no hay tiempos finales, ni desenlaces, solo nuevos comienzos, nueva vida». Ese dicho es fruto de mi reflexión personal y del estudio de la Sagrada Escritura. Básicamente, he reformulado lo que me parece una comprensión fundamental del sentido de nuestras vidas iluminadas por la luz de Cristo y la experiencia de su misericordia. La celebración de la resurrección de Cristo y las lecturas evangélicas que forman parte de nuestras liturgias pascuales sirven todas ellas para fundamentar la esperanza que mi reflexión pretende expresar, especialmente a partir del relato de la Resurrección escrito por San Lucas proclamado en la liturgia de la Vigilia Pascual, que incluye lo siguiente:  
 

<¿Por qué buscan entre los muertos al que está vivo? No está aquí, sino que ha resucitado. Recuerden lo que les dijo cuando aún estaba en Galilea: que el Hijo del hombre debía ser entregado a los pecadores, ser crucificado y resucitar al tercer día">>(Lucas 24: 1-7; el énfasis es mío)*.

Con inquisición y sinceridad de niños, pero sin el menor matiz de engaño, los «dos hombres» formulan una pregunta: «¿Por qué buscan entre los muertos al que está vivo?». Nuestra respuesta tendrá mucho que ver con nuestros anhelos, y con dónde podemos esperar encontrar signos y esperanzas de vida.   

Estoy convencido de que Cristo Jesús nos hace la misma pregunta, pero espera que, en lugar de intentar responder con palabras, respondamos haciéndonos lo bastante fuertes para buscar la misericordia del Señor, lo bastante humildes y agradecidos para recibirla, y lo bastante alegres para ser misericordiosos.

La Pascua es el momento de alegrarnos de Su resurrección y de nuestra redención, y de reconocer que sus promesas eternas nos invitan a ir más allá de cualquier pensamiento sobre el final, y que su misericordia no sólo nos ofrece la posibilidad de una segunda oportunidad, sino la experiencia real de una vida nueva, «por Él, con Él y en Él», para nosotros y para quienes nos rodean.
