From Advent to Christmas: The journey from seeking joy to knowing joy, in person
On the third Sunday of advent, the second reading proclaimed: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all….” In today’s Gospel reading for the fourth Sunday of Advent, this final moment before the Christmas celebration begins, we hear Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, crying out, “For at the moment, the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.” It almost appears that we need to be reminded to rejoice and experience true joy.
Late Advent season and Christmas are usually characterized by joy. We all know that it is meant to be a special and joyful time of year. Still, for many, who, like me, may be grieving the loss of loved ones, rejoicing can be easier said than done. This might be especially acute during Christmas. Many people might even think during this festive season, “Where does joy go the rest of the year?”
Sometimes, grief, suffering and other difficulties can make a person think that God is not interested in our situation. However, today’s Gospel reading, which recounts the Visitation, shows us the Blessed Mother’s determination to share with us the cause of true joy, the Christ-child she carried in her womb.
In the end, our most sincere longings can only be answered by God. The Virgin Mary responds to the deep desires of our hearts by giving us her son, our Redeemer. The Visitation shows how she is always at the ready to respond by bringing us her son, Christ Jesus.
As the holy season of Advent concludes and the annual festivities of the birth of our Savior return, may we recognize and be grateful for the reasons to be glad both within us and around us. May we recognize and rejoice that, in Christ, joy is with us always and now seeks to be born, no longer in a stable, but in our hearts and minds, so that we might enjoy his graces and share the joy of his mercy.

El tercer domingo de adviento, la segunda lectura proclamaba: « Alégrense siempre en el Señor. Lo repetiré: ¡alégrense! Su bondad debe ser conocida por todos. El Señor está cerca. No tengan ninguna inquietud....». En la lectura del Evangelio de hoy, cuarto domingo de Adviento, este momento final antes de que comience la celebración de la Navidad, oímos a Isabel, la madre de Juan el Bautista, exclamar: «En el momento en que llegó a mis oídos el sonido de tu saludo, el niño de mis entrañas saltó de alegría». Casi parece que necesitemos que nos recuerden que debemos alegrarnos y experimentar la verdadera alegría.
El final del tiempo de Adviento y la Navidad suelen caracterizarse por la alegría. Todos sabemos que debe ser una época especial y alegre del año. Sin embargo, para muchos que, como yo, sufren la pérdida de seres queridos, alegrarse puede ser más fácil decirlo que hacerlo. Esto puede ser especialmente agudo durante la Navidad. Mucha gente puede llegar a pensar durante estas fiestas: «¿Adónde va la alegría el resto del año?».
A veces, la pena, el sufrimiento y otras dificultades pueden hacer pensar a una persona que Dios no se interesa por nuestra situación. Sin embargo, la lectura del Evangelio de hoy, que narra la Visitación, nos muestra la determinación de la Virgen de compartir con nosotros la causa de la verdadera alegría, el Niño Jesús que llevaba en su seno.
Al final, nuestros anhelos más sinceros sólo pueden ser respondidos por Dios. La Virgen María responde a los deseos profundos de nuestro corazón dándonos a su Hijo, nuestro Redentor. La Visitación muestra cómo está siempre dispuesta a responder trayéndonos a su hijo, Cristo Jesús.
Mientras concluye el tiempo santo del Adviento y vuelven las festividades anuales del nacimiento de nuestro Salvador, reconozcamos y agradezcamos las razones para alegrarnos, tanto dentro de nosotros como a nuestro alrededor. Ojalá reconozcamos y nos alegremos de que, en Cristo, la alegría está siempre con nosotros y ahora busca nacer, no ya en un establo, sino en nuestros corazones y mentes, para que podamos gozar de sus gracias y compartir la alegría de su misericordia.
