I wonder how the Evangelist Luke heard the story from the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The incident of losing Jesus and then finding Him at the temple had long passed, but I am sure that the emotions came back to her: fear, distress, helplessness, embarrassment, fright. But this time, those emotions were viewed from the lens of joy and peacefulness at what her Son taught her that day. She saw the bigger picture.
Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?
It was not yet the time for Jesus to begin public ministry, but the ministry had been underway in the nucleus of the family. The parents formed the bonds of the family and religiosity for themselves and their child: Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover.
It is what you do as a faithful Jew!
Now that we live in the Anni Domini, the years of the Lord, it is our turn to follow that example and begin in that nucleus of the home. Is every Catholic family perfect? No.
But we do need to begin at the home, whatever our family looks like. Home is a sacred place where we learn: not only the traditions of our faith but also how to be a good citizen of society.
This tireless trial and error on the road to perfection will feel different when we retell our journey years from now—or, as we share it now of our upbringing. It’s a story of triumph on how the Lord has worked in our lives.
It all begins at home. And remember: It is never too late to amend our ways, to live the traditions of the faith, and to be a sign for the world that God is with us.

El incidente de perder a Jesús y luego encontrarlo en el templo había pasado hacía tiempo, pero estoy seguro de que las emociones volvieron a ella: miedo, angustia, desamparo, vergüenza, susto. Pero esta vez, esas emociones fueron vistas desde el lente de la alegría y la paz por lo que su Hijo le enseñó ese día. Ella vio el panorama completo.

Todavía no era el momento de que Jesús comenzara el ministerio público, pero el ministerio ya se había puesto en marcha en el núcleo de la familia. Los padres formaban los lazos de la familia y de la religiosidad para sí mismos y para su Hijo: Los padres de Jesús solían ir cada año a Jerusalén para las festividades de la Pascua.
¡Eso es lo que se hace como un judío fiel!
Ahora que vivimos en los años del Señor, nos toca seguir ese ejemplo y comenzar en ese núcleo del hogar. ¿Son perfectas todas las familias católicas? No.
Pero sí es necesario comenzar en el hogar, sea cual sea el aspecto de nuestra familia. El hogar es un lugar sagrado donde aprendemos: no sólo las tradiciones de nuestra fe, sino también cómo ser un buen ciudadano de la sociedad.
El camino a la perfección incansable entre prueba y error nos resultará diferente cuando lo contemos dentro de unos años, o cuando lo narramos ahora de nuestra formación. Es una historia de triunfo sobre cómo el Señor ha obrado en nuestras vidas.
Todo empieza en casa. Y recuerda: nunca es demasiado tarde para enmendar nuestros caminos, vivir las tradiciones de la fe y ser un signo para el mundo de que Dios está con nosotros.
También compartiremos nuestra historia recordando los sufrimientos en vista de las alegrías de la gracia de Dios.
